What's all this anti fashion?

So there I am in the hellish process of writing my personal statement. I reach a point where I need to name a fashion faux pas so I begin to go through the obvious... neon? Nope. No no no, neon is currently THE trend at marc jacobs! So I proceed to come up with an alternative, anoraks? surely? If you are an 'anorak' you are highly un sophisticated. But to my amazement they are so current they could not possibly be named as unfashoinable, what with water proof parkas appearing at burberry and Erin Fetherston's drapped cape like dresses looking terribly poncho like. (So are we doing ponchos now as well?) I finally think maybe hiking boots could work but yet I am foiled again because high street stores such as urban outfitters and Topshop are swarmed by high heeled versions of the little devils.

In the end I decide that carpenter jeans and paisley are fashions most offensive items. But I couldn't help but wonder, is it no longer enough to just wear the right clothes, classic A-grade clothes that are flawless and fabulous? Or do we have to over step the mark and venture into the unknown territory to succeed as a true fashion staple? Or, heaven forbid, does fashion no longer exist? And are we instead required to be a certain sort of person to be fashionable rather than wear the right thing? All these questions really beg the same answer.... WHAT IS FASHION NOW?

You tell me, but for now steer well clear of carpenter jeans.

fantasy high street

my shoppies!!!!!!

*SELFRIDGES, (oxford street London)
I swear there is no one on earth that can dislike  this shop, you can buy everything under the sun but the twist is everything is more magnificent and unusual than you could ever imagine!!

Plus it's windows are always fabulous, my very first and happiest memories of designer purchases occurred right here in this store.

Well when in London....

* THE HUMMINGBIRD BAKERY, (old Brompton road, south kensington)
Cupcakes anyone? I'd say so....

So so quaint, delicious, fabulous.

Cup cakes have to be the most fashionable food in the industry. There was even a feature article in American teen vogue about the little devils!

DO NOT MISS OUT

* LA MAISON DIOR (La rue de Montaigne, Paris)
The most exquisite store I have ever has the privilege of stepping into. Everything looks like it is tended to about twenty times daily and despite it being home to the most jaw dropping prices you are made to feel like royalty rather than unwelcome.

My one and only glorious memory of the french exchange.

* RINKY TINKS ICE CREAM PARLOR (Marine parade, Lyme Regis)
My mother's pride and joy... and as biased as it might be it is fabulous.

Enjoy everything and anything from sundaes to toast...

I only wish someone else had thought of it so I wouldn't be quite so immune to it's charm.

* JUMEIRAH HOTEL (London, Dubai, Paris etc. etc.)
My favorite place to stay...

This is so bloody luxurious and at a pretty reasonable price.
I reckon you can always tell when a hotel is fab because it provides you things you really won't be needing but are tempted to steel ie. an ipod docking system.

I have great memories from this hotel and the weekend it gave me.

Tell me about your fantasy high street!!!!

Local yocal

Slap dash my local fashion show

annnnddd my article I did to go with it....

A night out at your local charity fundraiser might not be appear the most glamorous event however, the vintage fashion show at the marine theatre really raised the bar. It was a sell out event with a total of 160 tickets being sold to help raise money for Weldmar Hospice care trust. As soon as the doors opened anyone could tell that this was one glamorous event, with everyone decked out in their very finest and with a glass of wine on arrival it was possible to picture such a scene on the catwalks of Milan.

The theatre was completely transformed in to a magnificent backdrop of what you might call haute décor. A combination of sparkling chandeliers and a flock of ornamental peacocks helped set the scene for a truly fabulous display.

Hilary Highet introduced each decade of vintage fashion with a brief history. We were taken back in time via capsule wardrobes from the early Edwardian era to present day. The show turned out to be a treat for real culture vultures, including pieces from Christian Lacroix to Christian Dior, all modelled beautifully by local girls of all ages.

The clothes were loaned from private collections from around the county and even included pieces designed and made by Woodroffe students. Who knows, maybe Lyme could be responsible for the fashions ‘next big thing.’ All I know is despite being in a totally different world to Paris or Milan, Lyme has got some serious style.

gender bender

Traditionally an anti-fashion and the uniform of the controversial, the trans gender trend is not all that accepted but if you take a look around at some of the fashion houses and maybe even a bit closer to home you'll discover a mass of multiple sexes. Take for example the apple of London's eye, Agyness Dean, you stick some of her clothes on a bloke and you wouldn't go far wrong but yet somehow the edge and flair that comes with the juxtaposition of a pure fashion faux pas excites and stimulates the fashion world. The same goes for recent take off artist, Ladyhawke who sources all of her clothes from the menswear section. Similarly huge fashion houses take on the trend, for example marc jacobs who recently achieved fashion acclaim with his men's skirts.

How is it that such a massive mistake can go so right? Because primarily that's what it is a mix up of what we're supposed to wear. I think that it is the controversy that causes the rush. The pure fact that this simple trend swap gains so much attention is what makes it so successful. It is actually achieving the desired affect, we look, it's new, we buy. It's such a huge trend that sometimes it goes unnoticed. We're so busy focusing on the more outrageous side of the trend that we miss the fact that it goes on every where, we've done it for years ever since the first woman slipped on her overalls in the war we gained the trend that brings with it practicality and controversy all at the same time. So every time you slip on your jeans (if you're a woman) you are trans gendering!

To conclude doing a boyfriend blazer is right on trend, borrowing your dad's shorts is not. Stick to clothes that are made for your sex to stay on the safe side, the style of boyfriend jeans and a lumber jack shirt has terrific appeal unless you source it from your boy friend.

we love....Arty Farty Rob

Fashion is an art. Something that takes so many hours and so much thought just has to be. So when it comes to actual art I'm quite often baffled. But I found someone who I love and then just a few months down the line I found his work in British Elle and I think it's bloomin' well time he gets appreciated in the fashion world. Rob Ryan is his name. I am not going to bore you with countless dates of when he was born or who inspires him but simply urge you to take a look at this work. I swear it will make you swoon and you will want to relate to every last word and be just as in love as he is. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you some topping examples and I have coordinated them oh so wonderfully to the fashion world:

A Rob vogue cover, no wouldn't that be nice

ingenious investments

Here is my little spread on investment jems for this season, enjoy!

this trend of time travel...

Fashion is all about timing. One week a pair of thigh high boots could get you a job at vogue the next they could land you a job as a hooker, purely because of bad timing. Some fashion is classic or Timeless which tends to be the easy option that we all want to stick to. So how do we know what trends will send us forward and which ones have missed the boat?

At the moment time is of the essence and decades are floating about all over the fashion scene so it's easy to feel a little like we're lost in limbo. Trends from this season include the pop of neon and bionic shoulder pads of the 1980s as seen in marc jacobs and in the form of leather skirts at Yves Saint Laurent. And what about the sudden step back to the 1940's dogtooth with Alexandra Mqueen and Stella Mccartney. It's hard to know what decade we're in any more!

Then there is the bang in fashion. The thing we've not seen before, the dawn of the future trend. This is arguably for the bravest of fashionistas who are looking for a fresh start not a rebound wardrobe. The trick to conquering the fashion time lapse is to break it. Don't stick to one time because that way you are not loyal to one decade. Choose pieces that can't be labeled as a particular era and encase yourself with the scary option of the future trend. Don't be afraid of something new because by wearing it you can never be outdated!
