I don't know if I even dare utter it but Alexander McQueen is dead.

I felt it needed a pause for reaction there...... It is as significant in the fashion world as if the queen herself were to die. Alexander represented an awful lot within and outside the fashion industry. His political fashion was often seen as a little extrovert in many people's eyes. His a/w 09 collection got even to the point of scary when he sent models down the catwalk with overtly 'swollen' lips and blackening eyes. His shows always meant something. S/S 09 he came down the catwalk in a bunny costume with a setting of exotic animal props around him showing his love for the world and all the creatures in it. His A/W set consisted of charred remains of his previous sets for previous shows which demonstrated his strong feelings about environmental issues.

I guess what I am trying to say is that he wasn't just another designer, he was brave. He didn't stick to the trend pattern, notice he was the only designer this seasons to raise the heel up a notch rather than adopt a flat. He represented change and excitement in the fashion industry and I just don't know if there is anyone who can truly fill that void.....

Right so it's valentines day coming up which you either love or hate depending on whether you're single not single, newly wed or on Jeremy Kyle with marital issues. But I think it's time that I introduced you to my other half....

 

NO NOT THAT SORT OF OTHER HALF!!!!!!!

The love of my life, my marc by marc jacobs bag. We are rarely seen apart, we go everywhere together and I feel like I can trust him with anything. I have no idea what I would do if it were ever to 'split'

Right ok corny jokes aside this bag is the love of my life. It was my first designer bag and only one to date. I have a feeling that I will have many love affairs in the future with many other bags but none will quite mean as much to me as me ol' reliable. It is true I have many lovers in the form of Burberry skirts, Chanel wallets and Paul & Joe dresses but there's something about the bag that's as special as the day I got it. There is true love in that bag and I think that everyone out there eventually finds their couture couple that could last longer than a relationship or, god forbid, even a marriage. This is more than just an 'it' bag, this is for life.

   Note, this is not the actual bag. I couldn't find a picture online and I was too ashamed to take a picture of my current battered sack, but let that not diminish my love for it!

Excuse me... but could you tell me where the designer went?

A new year. A new diet. A new excuse as to why you have chosen to postpone your diet. And of course the prestigious s/s line from all of our favorite designers. Or so you would hope.

Spring summer 2010 saw the arrival of the practical shoe that has been missing from the practical woman's wardrobe for countless years. Clogs, wedges and even flats have appeared on the cat walk with us all pledging great thanks seeing as our Scholl party feet probably couldn't last another season of mistreatment!
They were everywhere from alternative flip flops at marc jacobs to classic wedged sandals at Calvin Klein.

BUT. And this is a big but, the main trend that seemed to fall among these 'designer labels' is the lack of label. Instead of boasting their usual luxe and top trumping one another with adormements of every material under the sun, the shoes were quite humble, not scuptual or distracting, but something wearable and for once comfortable.

But when is a label not a label?... When it's labeless? Does the label and ingenious of shoes like no other justify our spending? If a shoe is labeless does that mean that we are on the footpath to nowhere? Do we ultimately need the show and attention that comes with wearing shoes by John Galliano or Alexander McQueen? Or is this new trend something liberating, something that makes the buy worth while.

Only time can tell but I believe whilst we still recover from the recession these shoes are the safety net. They provide risk free fashion that will carry us all the way in to the next season.

I beat Vogue

As vein and as self promoting as it might seem I had to post this.... I was ahead on trends on Vogue not once but twice!!!!!! Can you actually believe it!
First occasion was my observation of the quaint cute-ness and fabulousity of the humble cup cake which was featured in my fantasy high street blog a couple of months ago and yet, low and behold! There is an entire article on them in this months British Vogue!

But to make my head even bigger I struck the fashion jack pot again! Sex and the city is my all time favorite programme and I could honestly spend hours of my life watching it if only comedy central provided more episodes. Anyway in my sad and desperate admiration of Carrie Bradshaw I found myself hunting for my very own 'Carrie' necklace but of course saying 'martha' to be a little more alternative. And then but a month later (after many friends had found much fun in laughing at my 'fashion faux pas' ghetto gold) there on the FRONT COVER of Vogue was a name necklace and they have appeared again in this months Elle!

I never knew I was so influential! ha ha

What's all this anti fashion?

So there I am in the hellish process of writing my personal statement. I reach a point where I need to name a fashion faux pas so I begin to go through the obvious... neon? Nope. No no no, neon is currently THE trend at marc jacobs! So I proceed to come up with an alternative, anoraks? surely? If you are an 'anorak' you are highly un sophisticated. But to my amazement they are so current they could not possibly be named as unfashoinable, what with water proof parkas appearing at burberry and Erin Fetherston's drapped cape like dresses looking terribly poncho like. (So are we doing ponchos now as well?) I finally think maybe hiking boots could work but yet I am foiled again because high street stores such as urban outfitters and Topshop are swarmed by high heeled versions of the little devils.

In the end I decide that carpenter jeans and paisley are fashions most offensive items. But I couldn't help but wonder, is it no longer enough to just wear the right clothes, classic A-grade clothes that are flawless and fabulous? Or do we have to over step the mark and venture into the unknown territory to succeed as a true fashion staple? Or, heaven forbid, does fashion no longer exist? And are we instead required to be a certain sort of person to be fashionable rather than wear the right thing? All these questions really beg the same answer.... WHAT IS FASHION NOW?

You tell me, but for now steer well clear of carpenter jeans.
